On Friday, July 17, 2015, at Swimming Pools Kantrida it was held a press conference on the occasion of seventh anniversary of the opening of the mentioned complex. At the conference were present mayor of city of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel, director of Rijeka sport Zlatan Hreljac, manager of Swimming Pools Kantrida and head coach of Danish national swimming team Nick Juba.
All guests could hear form the mayor main swimming competitions that were hosted at Swimming Pools Kantrida such as European championship short course, water polo Final Four Euro League, international synchronized swimming competition etc. Mr. Obersnel also mentioned Swimming Pools Kantrida will host European Universities Games; in Rijeka will be held competitions in water polo, swimming and para-swimming. Facility is suitable for the disabled and it hosted several competitions for the disabled: Croatian championship for swimmers with disabilities in 2010, Swimming festival for the disabled in 2011 and 2012, open regional swimming competition for the disabled in 2013.
Swimming Pools Kantrida won a bronze medal awarded to water sports facilities by the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They received a special recognition (IPC Distinction) by the International Paralympics Committee among facilities suitable for the disabled.
In order to secure funds for building the pool complex, the City of Rijeka issued municipal bonds.
Director of Rijeka sport Zlatan Hreljac mentioned the complicated construction of the complex; in 5 stages, it has been built 28 individual buildings that needed more than 30 construction permits.
Except 5 pools (Olympic Swimming Pool 1 (indoor swimming pool), Olympic Swimming Pool 2 (outdoor swimming pool), Pool 25 m, Children’s swimming pool and a diving pool) , Swimming Pools Kantrida include fitness, wellness, offices, sunbathing area, public squares, garage, beach, as well as cafe bars, shops and restaurant.
Users of Swimming Pools Kantrida are citizens of all ages, little babies and elder participate in different sport programes organized at Rijeka's pools.
Beside 15 sport clubs, the pools are being used by non profit associations; in 2008 there were 18, and by the end of the 2014 26 non profit associations.
The number of users that signed contract before usage of the facility increased; in 2008 there was 34, and by the end of the 2014 58 business users (domestic and foreign sport clubs, national swimming teams, companies, associations, sports recreation).
Swimming Pools Kantrida are opened more than 5 500 hours per year for all users, total number of users' entries is 300 thousand a year; the last year the mention was 312 thousand and 35 thousands entries of citizens for sports recreation.
Daily Swimming Pools Kantrida have nearly thousand users, and they are opened from Monday til Sunday, from 6,15 am til 10,30 pm.
During the entire week, the highest standards of cleaning and maintenance are carried out at the complex to make sure users would be completely comfortable and safe, the director pointed out.
Manager of Swimming Pools Kantrida Marko Strahija knows best the athletes' requests during a training session at the Swimming Pools Kantrida. The worlds' best athletes obviously get everything they need in Rijeka; many foreign groups picked Rijeka's facility for their training camps.
Danish national swimming team already experienced training conditions at Swimming Pools Kantrida, this is their third time in Rijeka and their training camp lasts from July 16 til July 27, 2015. Nick Juba, their head coach, mentioned beauty and functionality of the facility, as well as kind and devoted personnel always at their service. Among the national swimming team athletes currently at Swimming Pools Kantrida are three world champions and two European champions.
On July 22, 2015, the USA National Swimming Team will arrive to Rijeka and til July 29 they will be readying for the upcoming FINA World Championship in Russia.
